Chetan’s passion for sustainable mobility started 30 years ago when he was part of the University of Michigan Solar Car team that stood first in the race across the US and came 3rd in the World Solar Challenge in Australia. Since then he has been relentlessly working on making electric vehicles affordable.Chetan had launched ‘Reva’, India’s most affordable electric car which went on to become the world’s best-selling electric car, at one point of time, having been sold in over 24 countries. In 2013 (then Mahindra Reva), it had reached new heights when it was named as one of the Top 50 Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company magazine.
In 2017, Uday Khemka, promoter of SUN Group and Chetan joined hands to realize their shared vision of making electric mobility affordable and accessible to masses and formed SUN Mobility. SUN Mobility is a joint venture between Maini Group and SUN Group. This partnership brings in synergies of the Maini Group which is a diversified engineering powerhouse providing solutions for intra-campus electric mobility, material handling, aerospace and automotive precision products and the SUN Group which has global investments in the range of sectors such as energy (oil & gas), mining, renewable energy and new energy storage applications.
The SUN Mobility's vision is to create a universal network of interoperable energy infrastructure to accelerate mass adoption of electric mobility. The approach of separating batteries from vehicle through the quick battery swapping model addresses the key issues facing electric vehicles – high upfront cost, range anxiety and long charging time. The revolutionary digitally enabled ‘Pay-as-you-go’ system for battery usage offers an extremely convenient way to refuel EVs, thus fostering adoption.
SUN Mobility has collaborated with vehicle manufacturers, battery cell technology providers, fleet operators/aggregators, oil marketing companies and cities across the ecosystem to enable quicker adoption of its solution, thereby accelerating mass EV transition.
An entrepreneur and technologist for over two decades, Chetan is passionate about creating sustainable mobility solutions to accelerate mass adoption of electric mobility. Having invented the Reva, India’s first electric car in 1999, an electric vehicle much ahead of its time, he is globally acknowledged as a pioneer in the electric vehicle space. He has over 25 years’ experience in leading teams that developed electric, hybrid and solar vehicles and has applied for/been granted over 35 global patents. Chetan played an instrumental role in advising the central and state governments on respective EV policies.
